Christmas isn’t about being everything to everyone. It’s about giving yourself space to breathe, laugh, rest, and enjoy the bits that actually matter. The magic isn’t in the perfect tree or the perfect dinner — it’s in you showing up as a kinder version of yourself to your family.
Let’s be honest: December has big main-character energy, and it expects us all to keep up. The school events, having to attend the office parties if you work, the wrapping marathons, meal planning for Xmas eve, Xmas day itself and, not forgetting, Boxing Day because the supermarkets either aren’t open or open later in the day.
I remember being totally exhausted in the lead up to Xmas day and wondering how I was going to get through it. I always loved the festive day and, somehow, got through it all. However, I do wish that I had followed what I am about to preach, see below, as tips to stay afloat.
So here are ten gentle, slightly cheeky, totally doable self-care tips for mums in the lead-up to Christmas — because your peace matters just as much as the presents.
1. Call rest a strategy, not a weakness
A 20-minute lie-down with a hot drink can genuinely reboot your whole mood. Treat it like part of the plan, not an indulgence.
2. Protect one morning a week like it’s sacred before the kids go back to school
Imagine: a morning with no errands, no school run chaos, no forced festive productivity. Use it to read, walk, journal, or stare out the window like a Victorian heroine. Bliss.
3. Use the power of “Nope”
One of the hidden gifts of motherhood is the effortless ability to say, “Nope, don’t do that”. Instead of saying that to the kids, use it to set your boundaries. For e.g:
No to 17 Secret Santas.
No to being the only one who remembers the napkins.
No to high-stress traditions that nobody even likes like, in my case, finishing dessert before watching the King’s Speech. My husband insists on this but not this year. A Christmas lunch should last all afternoon and not be timed out by the TV schedule.
4. Swap perfection for ‘good enough’
Nobody remembers the hand-tied bows or artisan gift tags. They remember your vibe. A calmer mum beats a polished Christmas every time.
5. Schedule your joy or December will schedule chaos for you
Joy doesn’t just happen in December. Book it. A Christmas market wander, a festive film, a quiet bath with candles you’ve been “saving” — make it official.
6. Move your body kindly
Not punishment. Not “working off” mince pies. Just movement that keeps the aches in check. A slow walk under twinkly lights counts as therapy. So does dancing in the kitchen while the kettle boils.
7. Get off the comparison carousel
Instagram mums with their matching pyjamas and colour-coded gift wrap? Lovely for them. But you’re allowed a Christmas that fits your real life, not their curated one.
8. Breathe before you bite
Family drama has a festive subscription plan. Before you react, take three slow breaths. It’s cheaper than therapy and stops you from decking anyone instead of the halls.
9. Give yourself a proper bedtime
Sleep is the real Christmas miracle. Prioritise it like your sanity depends on it (because… it does).
10. Make a “December Emergency Kit”
Think of it as first aid for your spirit:
your favourite snack
warm socks
a cosy candle
a 3-minute meditation
a reminder that you’re doing your best
