Somewhere along the journey into motherhood, an unspoken rule appears.
It goes like this: ‘Dress sensibly. Dress modestly. Dress like a “proper” mum’.
As though becoming a mother means quietly packing away the parts of yourself that loved bright colours, bold prints, leather jackets, high heels or a little sparkle.
But who wrote those rules?
Motherhood changes many things. It changes our priorities, our responsibilities and often our perspective. It shouldn’t erase our personality.
The idea that mothers should dress conservatively isn’t about practicality. It’s about expectation. Women are often encouraged to become less visible once they become mothers—as though confidence, individuality and self-expression somehow make us less nurturing.
Our children don’t need mothers who fit neatly into society’s image of what a mum should look like. They need mothers who are comfortable in their own skin. Mothers who show them that growing older doesn’t mean becoming smaller.
Mothers who teach, through example, that authenticity is far more powerful than conformity, are equipping their kids with an important sense of self-belief.
Wear what makes you feel alive.
Have a great week.
