Monday anxiety is real, and honestly, it doesn’t get talked about enough.
Monday anxiety isn’t just “ugh, work again”, if you are still working. But you don’t have to be a worker to feel that that tight feeling in your chest on Sunday afternoon. The low-level dread that creeps in at the thought of losing the psychological safety of a Sunday for a bustling Monday can be crippling.
For mothers, it’s heavier because Mondays carry a myriad of responsibilities – money worries, ageing parents, children, health stuff, partners and coordinating family life.
There’s also the pressure to “be grateful.” I have opinions about this. Gratitude is lovely, but it’s not a cure-all. You can be grateful and anxious. You can love your life and dread Mondays. Both can exist. Pretending otherwise just adds guilt to the anxiety pile, and frankly, none of us need that.
What helps me with Monday anxiety isn’t fixing my whole life by 9am. It’s shrinking the day. One gentle intention. One thing I can control. Sometimes it’s wearing something soft. Sometimes it’s refusing to look at emails before breakfast. Sometimes it’s reminding myself that Monday is not a verdict on my entire future.
I also think we underestimate how tired we are. Motherhood exhaustion is real – sleep changes from looking after sick kids or such like, emotional labour, and years of being “the capable one” add up.
Monday anxiety can simply be your body saying, I need a different pace now. That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom knocking.
One small reframe that helps: Monday isn’t the enemy. The pressure we’ve loaded onto it is. Mondays don’t need motivation speeches. They need kindness. They need realistic expectations and fewer shoulds. You’re allowed to start the week gently, even if the world tells you otherwise.
So if Monday anxiety is visiting you today, you’re not broken. You’re paying attention. Take a breath. Do one doable thing. And remember, you’re allowed to build a life where Mondays feel lighter over time. Even if right now, they just feel survivable.
