If you’re looking for something fun, uplifting, and family-friendly to do during the school holidays, Elves and the Shoemaker at Greenwich Theatre is a sparkling little gem.
The story takes a familiar fairy-tale and gives it a modern twist. When a rent collector turns up at a struggling shoemaker’s workshop, things start to look bleak. In the dead of night, elves turn up and work their magic to help the shoemaker. At first, the shoemaker is convinced that these surprise visitors spell trouble. But as the elves work their cheeky magic, the shoemaker (and the audience!) are left wondering if the real problem is the elves—or simply learning to embrace a little help when it’s offered.
From the moment the curtain rises, the energy is infectious. The stage is alive with colour, clever set design, and plenty of sparkle to keep children’s eyes glued to the action. The elves themselves are bundles of mischief—full of giggles, tumbles, and playful banter that had the children in the audience laughing out loud.

The songs are toe-tappingly good. There’s a perfect balance of humour, heart, and just the right amount of silliness to keep both kids and adults entertained.
What I particularly loved is that, beneath the fun and mischief, there’s a gentle message about kindness, teamwork, and not being afraid to accept help. The central message of the musical – courage to embrace change and to accept help from others – is a vital lesson for kids. It’s the sort of story that opens up conversations afterwards—always a bonus for parents looking for more than just surface entertainment.
At just the right length for younger attention spans, 45 minutes, Elves and the Shoemaker is an ideal holiday outing. It’s lively without being overwhelming, and it leaves you with that warm, fuzzy feeling only a well-told story can bring.

If you’re in London over the school break and fancy a magical treat, I’d highly recommend booking tickets at the Greenwich Theatre. A family show that’s both charming and memorable—a perfect way to sprinkle a little fairy-tale sparkle into the holidays.
