
Motherhood in 2022 – modern Britain where mothers are having to make so-called ‘choices’ akin to choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea. ‘Struggling’ does not even cut it as a descriptor of what mothers are going through.
When your kids are hungry and the cupboard is bare, how far would you go to feed them? Some women are selling their eggs for £750. Monetising your own eggs is the new hustle to earn extra money. The demand from childless women for fertility treatment is an opportunity but it comes at a cost. There is a medical process to undergo with some unpleasant-sounding side effects. Granted that you will be paid all sorts of expenses for your efforts but will this be adequate enough for the emotional stress incurred?
The cost of living crisis is a national problem. Yet, individuals are having to make decisions on how to mitigate against the crisis while the energy companies reap huge profits. There are truly heartbreaking stories on how mothers are having to cut back on essentials. It is hard to believe that even sanitary protection has become unaffordable for many in the UK.
It’s sobering when one considers that the worst of the economic crisis still hasn’t hit us. Mothers aren’t units on an economic spreadsheet. Think Tanks and economists probably have not even considered mothers as a category that is dealing with a high level of fallout from the economic crisis. We are individuals doing our hardest to keep our children clothed, fed, and warm. Will anyone in Government spare a thought for mothers? I won’t hold my breath.
